Can I use this font, photo or AI image for that?
Straight answers to the 15 questions designers actually ask, for 18 font, stock and AI sources and 150 Google Fonts families. Every answer quotes the clause and links to the source.
Fonts
All sourcesAdobe Fonts
Font library included with paid Creative Cloud plans. Licensed through your Adobe subscription, not as standalone files.
Creative Market
Marketplace for fonts and design assets. Fonts are sold under separate Desktop, Webfont, Ebook, App and Digital Ads EULAs.
Envato Elements
Subscription library of fonts, graphics, templates, photos and more under one Elements License. Fonts are licensed per installation while you subscribe.
Font Squirrel
Directory of free fonts it believes are licensed for commercial use. Licences vary font by font, so check each font's own licence.
Fontshare
Free font service from the Indian Type Foundry. 'Closed Source' fonts use the ITF Free Font License; 'Open Source' fonts use the SIL OFL. Answers below are for the ITF Free Font License.
Fontspring
Independent font marketplace. Its licence pages blocked automated fetching on 19 Oct 2026 (a cookie/consent wall returned no licence text), so every answer below needs manual verification.
Google Fonts
Free, open-source font library. Most families use the SIL Open Font License; a few use Apache 2.0 or the Ubuntu Font Licence.
MyFonts (Monotype)
Large font marketplace run by Monotype. Licences are sold per use (Desktop, Webfont, App, Electronic Doc, Digital Ad, Server), and each foundry's EULA can differ.
Stock & content
All sourcesAdobe Stock
Stock photos, vectors, video and templates with Standard, Enhanced and Extended licences. Answers are from Adobe's licence summary page; the full Terms & Conditions are not yet checked.
Canva
Design platform with a content library (photos, graphics, fonts, templates). Content is licensed for use inside Canva designs; special rules apply to Pro, Branded, Education and Disney content.
Pexels
Free photo and video library under the Pexels License.
Shutterstock
Stock images, video and music. Shutterstock's main licence page blocked automated fetching; answers come from its contributor help article and need manual verification against the full licence.
Unsplash
Free photo library under the Unsplash License. The licence page itself (unsplash.com/license) blocked automated fetching with a bot challenge; answers come from Unsplash help articles and most need manual verification.
AI image tools
All sourcesAdobe Firefly
Adobe's generative AI. Adobe says non-beta outputs can be used commercially; output indemnification is limited to eligible business plans. The product terms PDF checked is dated 18 June 2024 and may have been superseded.
ChatGPT / DALL·E (OpenAI)
OpenAI's consumer terms (the version served outside the US was checked). You own your output; the terms don't list specific design uses.
Ideogram
AI image generator known for typography. Its terms assign output rights to you but also restrict commercial exploitation of the service and disclaim liability for commercial use — so commercial use is marked Unclear.
Leonardo.Ai
AI image and video platform. Commercial use is allowed on free and paid plans, but on the free plan Leonardo owns the output.
Midjourney
AI image and video generator. You own what you create, with exceptions for large companies and for upscales of other users' images.
Have a font file? Check what it says.
The “Can I use it?” checker
Pick a source and a use to see the verdict and the clause. Or drop a font file in to read its embedded licence fields (name IDs 13 and 14) — the file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
How to read a verdict
“Unclear” means the pages we read don't answer the question directly. “Needs manual check” means the page blocked automated reading and hasn't been verified by hand yet. 270 answers in total.
